Women's Self Defense

02/26/2015

I took self defense for women a couple semesters ago and I loved it. I was able to meet some girls that were not in my major and form lasting relationships with them. This class is a bonding experience especially when you are doing ground work. The instructor takes her job very seriously because she wants you to be able to get away from a bad situation. She always tells her students that "you will not learn how to beat someone up in this course. On average you will only get between 1 and 3 defensive strikes in on your attacker so you need to make them count." You will learn what defense strikes work best for you.

You will walk away from the class feeling capable and confident in your self defense skills. You will also learn how to be aware of your surroundings and to try to break into your own house. It is amazing how easy it is to see into a window or to open one that was left unlocked. I was more conscientious about where I live and how I could make my home safer. I recommend every woman take a self defense course because if you ever do get in a situation where it gets physical you want to know how to best defend yourself and get away from the attacker.

At IUE opportunities will be created for you. I took this course three semesters ago and was asked to come back the following year to serve as a ground attacker. This semester I was ask to be the assistant self defense instructor which I have already added to my resume. (You got to bulk up that resume to separate yourself from the competition.)  Opportunities will be created for you at IUE! I am so thankful I chose to go to Indiana University East!
