Police Academy: Week 3

06/7/2015

This week went much better! I have been able to make the adjustment in my sleep and workout schedule thank goodness. Last week was really rough for me because I was extremely homesick but this week was good! We had a three day weekend because of Memorial Day so I was able to spend some much needed time with my family and rest. It is really important to stay active on the weekends even when all you want to do is sleep and lay around. I was able to go for a run each day and work on my push ups and sit ups. After each pt run we finish with 20/20 which translates to twenty push ups and twenty sit ups. Friday we had a challenge of eighty sit ups in two minutes... I was so close... 78.

We studied criminal law in the mornings and had various other classes in the afternoon. We learned about sex crimes in one of our afternoon classes. The Monroe Deputy Prosecutor of Sex Crimes came to speak to us. Domestic violence was covered thoroughly as was crisis intervention, patrol techniques and the Indiana Intelligence Fusion Center. Crisis intervention was particularly emotional. We heard about four Indiana law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. The speaker was the father of one of the fallen law enforcement officers. Your life can be over in a moment. Knowing this 36 cadets continue through police academy with the intention of serving our communities as law enforcement officers.

I finally put the time in to come up with a cadence of my own for our pt formation runs:

  • That thin blue line is calling out

  • We answer without a doubt

  • We have the drive deep within

  • Blue brotherhood is our kin

  • Those red and blue flashing lights

  • Symbolize we do whats right

  • We swear to protect and serve

  • Life is meant to be preserved

Made it but have yet to be called during the formation run to say it. Kind of relieved because it is a bit nerve racking.

As the cadets were leaving class and walking to the parking lot an Indiana State Trooper vehicle spotted us. The vehicle did a 180 and stopped. The Trooper got out to speak with us. I thought to myself 'what a kind and supportive gesture for a veteran officer to take the time to share knowledge and experience with incoming law enforcement officers.' To my utter surprise not only was it an Indiana State Trooper but it was the Superintendent of Indiana State Police. Man oh man was I ecstatic!!! I was fan girling hard core when I got back to my apartment. I could not believe I just shook the hand of the Superintendent of Indiana State Police! He also gave us some insight on shining shoes - Kelly's Instant Shine Spray will keep your boots glossy and professional. Guess who has a shipment on the way :)

The IUPUI cadets rented rooms from the SAE Fraternity house which is spacious enough to have all 36 of us hang out. The IUPUI cadets decided to host a barbecue Friday after class. It was fun and the hamburgers were delicious! A few of us started a bonfire and after much effort it caught fire. I spent a couple hours there before I returned to Richmond.

Week three check!
