Gearing up for International Women's Day

03/04/2009

As I was returning to the dorm today after class, students in Class 48 invited me to attend the women's football game.  I knew they meant soccer, but didn't realize that the game would be indoors.  The stands were packed with students eager to cheer on the two teams--Class 48 English students versus Class 48 Economics students.  As the English students seated around me explained, this is the first of many events taking place in celebration of International Women's Day, which is Sunday March 8.  It is a VERY big day here.

The English students had no time to practice for the game and some had not played the sport since childhood, but they played with great spirit and zest.  Despite losing 0-2 to a stronger Economics team, English majors enjoyed the game immensely and, as you can see in this picture, were ready to celebrate.

One of the students asked me what we do in the U.S. to celebrate International Women's Day.  I told her about Women's History month, but I don't think IWD is celebrated as widely in the U.S. as it is here.  So be prepared--after Sunday I will post another report on this very special day.
